The Tenshi are dark analogues of the Espers. Legend has it that they appeared towards the end of the Great War and assisted the forces of darkness in their battle against the Espers and Founders. No one knows where they came from or why they joined the battle. However, what is known is that they single-handedly all but wiped the Espers out. It took the arrival of the "Chariots of God," also known as the "Espermechs" to defeat them, although they have resurfaced...
The name, "Tenshi," comes from an ancient language dating from before the Great War. It means "Angel."
Thusfar, five Tenshi have been revealed, three of which are called "Arch-Tenshi," and probably the most powerful of the race. The first had the appearance of a fallen angel (whose name if you're curious was Melkar). The second was the Demonmaster, Gabe, also known as Gabriel, who assisted Theran in his rise to total power in Savanti. The third was Sephirot, an Espermech-sized Siege-Tenshi, that attacked the Technomage capital of Torvalds. The fourth was Raphael, Gabe's brother, who appeared just before the Marina Crest was won. The fifth was Uriel, another of Gabe's brothers, who appeared on the road to Leuna, Chyu Nation.
The Arch-Tenshi, Gabriel (Demonmaster Gabe), Raphael, and Uriel, are the most powerful of the Tenshi. They may not have the sheer firepower of the Siege-Tenshi when it comes to laying waste to cities, but they are extremely strong foot soldiers with intelligence to match, something that the Siege-Tenshi lack, which does make them overall the most powerful of their clan. Update (As of Session 8): Apparently, the Tenshi are not natural creations -- they were created by an ancient force currently known only as the "Empire." This empire genetically engineered the Tenshi from the blood of Antonius, the Destroyer, which they acquired after a brutal battle where Antonius was badly wounded and a large portion of their forces were killed. Engineered to come in various forms, ranging from human-sized to the Espermech-sized (known as "Arch-Tenshi", they were created to combat the Espers and their Espermechs. Using a combination of genetic behavior implantation and bio-mechanical control, the Empire was able to make an army of Tenshi that wiped out all but a perhaps a few of the Espers. However, their first few creations were dubbed "failures," due to being impossible to control and not being powerful enough. One of these included an early female Tenshi with a striking resemblance to Rista...
Update (As of Session 9): Several more Tenshi were revealed... The first was Sephirot, a Siege-Tenshi that was Esper-mech sized. The others were Arch-Tenshi, like Gabe (AKA Gabriel), and were his brothers Raphael and Uriel.
Update (As of Session 10): Another Arch-Tenshi, Raphael, the brother of Demonmaster Gabe (AKA Gabriel) has appeared. It was also revealed that Rista is indeed a Tenshi, or at least descended from one.
Update (As of Session 14): The final Arch-Tenshi, Uriel, revealed himself on the road to Leuna in Chyu Nation, where he was wantonly killing and destroying in an attempt to locate something called "Azrael." He also decimated most of the party, with the exception of Rista, from whom he was able to draw her own innate Tenshi powers.
Update (As of Session 19): Gabe dueled with Kasumi in the Yamato Empire throne room in a re-enactment of sorts of the final battle between Dragon Knight Kane and the Destroyer. Gabe was soundly defeated, but did manage to escape with his life.
