Occupation / Profession

Jan is an Undead Slayer. It's his business to travel Lunar and the Blue Star to be rid of the rogue undead that crop up via wild magic, fallow curses, and dark mages. The problem is one than has been around for millennia, for as far back as living memory goes, but also one that lies on the fringes of popular concern. Most undead remain in ancient places where humanity rarely goes. It's only when they appear in civilized areas that they become a cause for concern. Hunting them is often a disgusting line of work with little thanks, but Jan bears it well. Ghosts, mummies, banshees, skeletons, slice o' dead (hehe...), etc. He's familiar with all of them and just as happy to be rid of them.

Appearance / Mannerisms

Jan stands about 5'9" and looks like a rather unassuming young man with short green hair, blue eyes, and a pair of goggles perched on his head. He dresses in dark colors suitable for blending in in graveyards, badlands, and such. He is twenty years old and tends to appear somewhat shy when in normal company.

Personality / Demeanor

One would think that working around undead would make a person pretty darn grim, but Jan is easy-going with a good sense of humor -- as long as he's not involved in his work that is. He absolutely hates undead and will fight them with a dragon's rage. This transformation from pleasure to business can be quite abrupt and unsettling to those around him. There aren't many things that bother him, but when Jan sets his mind to something, it is very difficult to dissuade him.

Motivation / Goals

To slay all undead. Well, that's probably not going to happen in his lifetime, and goodness knows he's aware of that. But Jan wants to make Lunar and the Blue Star as safe as they can be from them. Undead are a terrible thing, mocking the living and depriving souls of rest. If Jan can give peace to either the living or the dead, he knows that is what he must do.

Background / Hometown

Jan was raised in Vane on Lunar but had little inclination to become a wizard, which was something of a disappointment to his parents and friends of the family. He went to the usual elementary magic classes like all the other kids and promptly failed nearly everything. It wasn't that he was inept, but he lacked the interest.

He did however enjoy other exercises of the mind, complex puzzles and games. Playtime was also an important part of his childhood. Jan spent many an afternoon wound up in some sort of group sport or doing a bit of exploration with the other kids in his neighborhood.

When Jan was a teenager he and the other students of Vane went out on a field trip. Unbeknowst to them, a renegade mage with a grudge against Vane decided to make the class an example of what he planned to do to the rest of the city. The students and their teacher were attacked by a large horde of undead. Most were killed. Jan and two others were allowed to escape so that they could carry the message of what happened back to Vane.

The guild immediately organized a team of people to assault the mage's lair and arrest him. Though still battered and beaten from his last encounter, Jan volunteered to go with them. What he and the others found in the mage's lair was horrifying. All sorts of twisted parodies of life, both still alive and undead. The lair stank of a rotting death Jan would never forget. They managed to capture the mage and bring him back to trial, but not before witnessing the devastating power of his dark magic. It wasn't merely like the darkness magic, which as an element is not in and of itself evil, but something more malacious... and terrifying.

Jan resumed his studies, but with a different purpose. He could still remember the screams of his classmates as they died, some of them even being raised up as newly undead to aid in the mage's slaughter. He remembered the peace in the undead eyes when they were returned to the grave.

He studied a different magic from his peers. He obtained permission from Guild Premier Katarina Ausa to learn necromancy, a restricted art never taught openly in Vane. Now armed with the knowledge of how these beasts are created and how their masters fight, he has made it his personal quest to destroy them.

Jan is aware of the effect of holy power on undead, but nonetheless he is not very religious and does not associate with the church. He believes that such a thing as a goddess is a distant thought, otherwise Lucia would have been there when innocent lives were at stake.
