ed - text editor

ed is the original standard text editor for unix. Only the brave use it. Those who choose to use ed often know sed and want interactivity. I have never met someone who knew ed who did not know vi.

• 1,$p - print whole file
• w - write file
• a - append after current line
• i - insert before current line
• . - get out of insert/append mode
• s/<pat1>/<pat2>/p - substitute <pat1> with <pat2> and print resulting line
